Science Goals of the Lake Winnipeg Basin Initiative

Science Goal 6

Provide a scientific basis, based on the results of Lake Winnipeg Basin Initiative research and monitoring, to establish nutrient objectives for Lake Winnipeg and major tributaries. Performance indicators will be developed to assess the ecological health of Lake Winnipeg and the watershed.

Update on Recent Research:

  • Environment Canada worked with the Manitoba government and other partners to assess Lake Winnipeg’s physical, chemical and biological characteristics from 1999–2007. A final report will compile and assess historic data for Lake Winnipeg, highlight recent research on the lake, explore current and emerging issues of concern to the health and integrity of Lake Winnipeg, and provide a baseline against which the results of current research and monitoring activities can be compared. The report is expected to be finalized in early 2011.
  • Environment Canada also worked on a framework for establishing and evaluating nutrient objectives for Lake Winnipeg and tributaries. These data were provided to the Province of Manitoba Water Stewardship for review. The framework is expected to be completed in March 2011.
  • These projects, along with data collected from the Lake Winnipeg Basin Initiative research and monitoring projects, will provide a basis for moving forward on helping decision makers to establish ecologically relevant nutrient objectives for Lake Winnipeg and major tributaries. Results will also help identify appropriate measurements to assess the future ecological health of Lake Winnipeg and its watershed.
